Whilst it has been several months since Apple’s iOS 6 release, the mass download of their iOS has only just started to take off. One of the main reasons for this has been the debacle over Apple Maps. When iOS 6 launched it favored its new mapping service whilst booting Google Maps. The problem being that Apple Maps was full of inaccurate or missing data, distorted images, and bad directions. Whilst Apple CEO Tim Cook did apologise and vow to improve the program it meant that the iOS was without a decent mapping service. That was however until now.
With the launch of the new Google Map app, one of the main hurdles to people adopting the iOS has now disappeared. According to MoPub, iOS adoption has jumped 30% since the new Google Maps for iOS 6 was released. MoPub’s CEO told Techcrunch:
We observed since the launch of Google Maps for iOS 6 a 30 percent increase in unique iOS 6 users, and we think it’s related to Google Maps
It verifies the hypothesis that people were actually holding back to upgrade until Google Maps was available.
Since the launch of Google’s mapping app for iOS the app was downloaded more than 10 million times in the first 2 days alone. Jeff Huber, Google’s senior vice president of Commerce & Local wrote on Google+:
We’re excited for the positive reception of Google Maps for iPhone around the world. Congratulations to the Maps Team on the recognition for the passion and hard work they poured into it, for this release and over the last 7+ years.
If you’re an iPhone user and haven’t downloaded the Maps app yet, get it on the App Store or visit: https://itunes.apple.com/app/id585027354?mt=8.
If you already have it — thank you, and please tell a friend. Any feedback you have is welcomed, here in G+ or in the app (just shake it).
Bearing in mind that there about 400 million iOS devices in circulation in October Apple said that take up had been just 50%. Whilst it is likely this number had increased, and despite a surge in the number of recent iOS downloads in the last week, Apple still has some work to do to get the remainder to upgrade. For many, the hassle of upgrading and having to download Google’s app is not worth the trouble, since iOS still carries Apple’s mapping software that uses Google’s mapping data./technewstoday/
