Car drivers have plenty of ways to integrate smartphones with their
vehicle, but bikers? Not so much. That’s why Samsung has teamed up with
Trek Bicycle to create a new bike prototype, which the company refers to
as a “Galaxy - Trek Bike”.
The bike prototype allows you to mount a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 in a special cradle on the handlebar. When pedaling, the handset can be charged - so you
will actually juice up its battery instead of relying on electrical
power. The Galaxy Note 3 (or a Galaxy Gear smartwatch) can also
wirelessly connect to a bike sensor, tracking your speed, distance and
so on. Samsung didn’t say when we should expect to see such bikes
available for purchase, but we hope it will happen in the next few years
(with support for other new smartphones, of course). The company is
showcasing two Galaxy - Trek Bike concepts at CES 2014 as we speak.
Samsung
also partnered with BMW, integrating its Galaxy Gear watch with the BMW
i3 - the German automaker’s first fully electrical, zero-emissions mass
produced car. The Galaxy Gear can be connected to the i3 via the BMW i
Remote Application. Thus, the smartwatch displays important info,
including the status of the i3’s battery, drivable range, the status of
doors and windows, and so on. Users could also control the BMW i3's
climate via the Galaxy Gear, or send an address to the car’s navigation
panel. Like the Galaxy - Trek Bikes, the BMW i3 with Galaxy Gear
integration is on display at CES 2014 in Vegas.
