Sony’s PS4 unboxing video is influenced by Daft Punk, short and to the point

 

Even though the hardware inside both next-gen consoles is quite similar, Sony and Microsoft are clearly taking very different approaches to marketing them.
You may remember back in August when Major Nelson performed an Xbox One unboxing. The video was three and a half minutes long with Nelson speaking throughout and going into detail on every element in the box. We’ve had to wait until launch week for Sony’s official PS4 unboxing, and the company has decided to keep things minimal.
The video is just 86 seconds long, quickly takes you through everything included in the box, and finishes with Shuhei Yoshida, Sony’s Worldwide Studios president, simply stating, “greatness awaits.”

If you’re thinking the video looks familiar, then you’re probably a fan of Daft Punk. When their latest album Random Access Memories was released earlier this year an unboxed video was produced as a sort of teaser for the release. Sony has clearly been heavily influenced by that ad.

I much prefer videos that are to the point, and in the case of an unboxing video, unless some games are going to be booted up you really don’t want it to drag on. Don’t forget Sony has already produced a much more in-depth PS4 hardware video where engineering director Yasuhiro Ootori actually took one apart.
