How to play YouTube videos in the background

YouTube is the largest online streaming service, and music videos make up a large percentage of the videos that are being played on the site. It goes without saying therefore that most users would like to be able to streaming something off YouTube while using another app. In this article we will show you how to do this.

The official YouTube app will not allow you to listen to the audio of a video when you exit the app. There are other apps that have access to YouTube’s content that will allow you to do this. You need to download the right app and NextVid worked for us. The device used in this experiment was the Nexus 4 smartphone running Android 4.4.2.
First of all, you need to download the app NextVid - YouTube player on the Google Play Store. Download it and install it.

Then go to the app and search for the actual video that you want to watch or hear at the same time that you are using a different app. This part is obviously straight forward.

Once the video is playing, you can use the back or home buttons on the phone to exit the app. You will see a notification from NextVid in the notification tray indicating that the audio from the YouTube video is still playing. You can then proceed to using any other app you want without losing the YouTube audio.
