Huawei Ascend D2 Hands-on at CES 2013

Huawei announced couple of high-end Android smartphones at CES 2013 – Huawei Ascend Mate and Ascend D2 and we had a chance to get a quick hands-on of Ascend D2. Billed as the flagship device for 2013, Huawei Ascend D2 has both specs and looks to crave for. The Chinese telecom giant has stepped-up the game significantly with this top-end smartphone.

Powered by a custom 1.4GHz quad-core processor, a 5-inch Full HD 1080p screen with 443 pixels-per-inch and 2GB RAM, Huawei Ascend D2 is rubbing shoulders with the likes of HTC Droid DNA and Sony Xperia Z. Unlike its previous offerings, Huawei has greatly stepped up their design and build quality elements. Carrying the nice candy bar looks, the Ascend D2 has a glossy plastic back cover, which is bit of a downer, but the rim is constructed of stainless steel.

The 5-inch 1080 x 1920 pixels IPS display is beautiful and the 443ppi is possibly the best we have seen till date. The texts stand out, while the colors look natural on this Full HD screen. The custom made quad-core K3V2 processor is clocked at 1.5GHz, and the demo unit we tried looked really snappy while running the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean OS with Emotion UI.
As for the camera, it boasts an impressive 13 Megapixel rear camera, capable of shooting Full HD 1080p videos at 30fps and a front 1.3 Megapixel camera, capable of shooting 720p HD videos at 30fps. We couldn’t test the camera capabilities to the fullest, but we liked what we saw with the demo units at CES. Even the battery spec is impressive, as D2 comes with 3000mAh battery (as compared to 2020mAh on HTC Droid DNA) with fast charging technology.

Sadly, Ascend D2 has no MicroSD slot and hence no expandable memory available for storage junkies. It comes with 32GB built-in memory though. At 170 g it isn’t the lightest in its class, but doesn’t feel heavy either. Huawei says that Ascend D2 is dust and water resistant which is something more people are looking for in their smartphones these days.
Huawei Ascend D2 has been released for China (for $640) and will soon launch in Europe and Asia in Q1 2013. The hardware looks really snappy, but many would feel that Emotion UI is heavily skinned and unconventional. Check out our quick hands-on video below.
